Abstract
Abstract Chapter 10 examines rural domestic training for white women. Combining inspiration from the Canadian and American domestic science movements with the Afrikaner nationalist volksmoeder (‘mother of the people’) ideal, the authorities highlighted women’s duties of motherhood focused on the nation and cast domesticity as a corrective to the supposedly degenerative effects of female wage labour. White women eagerly sought out rural education services but, at the same time, transgressed Victorian notions of separate spheres that divided ‘male’ productive work from ‘female’ consumption. Teachers and students at the private Boschetto Agricultural College, the only agricultural college for women in the southern hemisphere, sought recognition as female farmers rather than as merely farmers’ wives. Nevertheless, government interventions to oppose women’s independent farming are indicative of how the rise of commercial farming devalued female contributions to agricultural production in South Africa and elsewhere.
