Abstract
Abstract The modern world is unimaginable without money. Money has been described as the world's operating system. Ironically, people's knowledge about money and monetary institutions is rudimentary. Beyond its economic function, people rarely realize how deeply money is woven into the fabric of contemporary societies. The full sociological understanding of money should begin with Georg Simmel's Philosophy of Money (1907) which takes a bird's‐eye view of the world as a great marketplace and shows how money enables one to see how everything exists in relation to everything else. Simmel uses money to gain critical insight into what is important to all that is human. Recent scholarship in the sociology of money shows how money is profoundly shaped through networks of social interaction and systems of meaning. It addresses how different kinds of monies are shaped by specific cultural and social factors and how money is a qualitatively heterogeneous phenomenon within social life.
