Abstract
Abstract Despite a historical aversion to permanent overseas entanglements, in 1949 the United States joined Canada and ten European countries in signing the North Atlantic Treaty. Seventy-five years later, the United States remains committed to a transatlantic alliance that now extends across most of the European continent. Despite a political consensus in Washington. that America’s national security priorities lie in countering China, the United States has continued in its role as guarantor of European security, particularly in the face of Russian aggression. The Russia–Ukraine war is a reminder that two of the core purposes of NATO in Europe—‘keeping the Russians out’ and ‘keeping the Americans in’—still matter even as calls for Europeans to do more for their own defence grow louder.
