Abstract
Carbon dioxide hydrate is a crystalline solid in which carbon dioxide molecules are trapped within cages formed by water molecules. These solids are useful in applications such as carbon capture and storage as they can store large volumes of gas at reasonable temperatures and pressures and have the ability to separate CO 2 from mixtures. Hydrate formation is a factor when considering injection of carbon dioxide into the ocean or storing CO 2 in sediments under the sea floor, permafrost regions, depleted gas fields, and methane hydrate reservoirs via CO 2 – CH 4 exchange, a method of recovering methane from marine natural gas hydrates by sequestering carbon dioxide as hydrates. The paper reviews the experimental work that determines the conditions at which carbon dioxide hydrates are formed or dissociate in pure water at various pressures and temperatures. There are many more papers discussing the hydrates of mixtures of carbon dioxide and other gases or compounds or discussing CO 2 –water systems in which water contains various salts. Some of these papers have been reviewed as they also included experimental data for hydrates in the pure carbon dioxide–pure water system.
