Halifax, from 1937 to 1943, then at Heath Grammar School, Halifax, from 1943 to 1951. He completed his A-level studies in English and History, receiving a variety of distinctions and scholarships.In 1951, Michael began two years of National Service, serving with the intelligence corps and undertaking language training in Russian (which proved useful during international archival visits in later years).Michael studied medieval and modern history at the University of Manchester, receiving his bachelor's degree in history, with first-class honours, in 1956 and his MA in 1958 with a thesis on 'The territorial possessions of Saint Wilfrid and their influence on his career'
