Abstract
L’article propose une analyse de la déclaration d’indépendance du Bas-Canada de 1838 à partir d’une perspective : les rapports entre citoyenneté et représentation chez les républicains canadiens. En se focalisant sur des exemples concrets comme le juré judiciaire ou la milice, il est expliqué pourquoi ces insurgés de 1838 considèrent le système politique d’inspiration britannique de 1791 comme insuffisant, puis comment ils comptent remédier à ces imperfections. Les limites de la participation citoyenne dans l’hypothétique République bas-canadienne doivent aussi être prises en compte en s’appuyant sur deux exemples, celui des femmes et des Amérindiens.
