Implementing a Men’s Shed community program to break older men’s social isolation in rural areas: what potential for gender-transformativity

Abstract
Social isolation of older men is a public health problem in many countries. Many initiatives are inspired by the Australian model of Men’s Shed to break the isolation through woodworking activities. Based on the opening of a Men’s Shed in a rural Canadian town, this paper details gender issues based on the experiences of men who participate in the Men’s Shed and the perception of community members involved it its opening. All parties involved value the governance structure and the supervision of activities. Users raise concerns about insufficient financial and material conditions, the importance of relationships and feelings of usefulness and belonging. Gender issues include power relations between users, employees and community members. Overall, the findings and discussion argue for the gender-transformative potential and the limits to consider for such initiative.
