Abstract
Cet article propose d’explorer les représentations de Zola et du naturalisme dans la presse française du premier xx e siècle, en particulier dans les hebdomadaires généralistes de l’entre‑deux-guerres puis dans les magazines des années 1950. L’hypothèse ici défendue est celle d’une grande vitalité médiatique de Zola et de ce qu’on peut appeler une « culture naturaliste » dans les périodiques appartenant à la culture moyenne ( middlebrow culture ). À rebours de la grande presse et des revues spécialisées qui, à la même époque, tiennent globalement Zola pour un grand homme mais un piètre romancier avant la grande réhabilitation des années 1950, les hebdomadaires puis les magazines s’approprient la fiction zolienne dès le début du siècle pour en faire une grille de lecture de l’actualité et la considèrent comme la matrice d’un courant néonaturaliste important à l’époque, un courant largement oublié aujourd’hui.
