Abstract
This chapter contextualizes the practice-research project Skin Bible: The Word Made Flesh. Skin Bible is a collaborative project by Canadian transmedial/performance artist Michael Dudeck and Australian bioartist Niki Sperou. The project centers upon the transgressive artifact, the Skin Bible , bound in a laboratory-produced, skin-like, marine algal biopolymer matrix seeded with Dudeck’s own cells. The project builds upon longstanding investigation by both artists: Dudeck’s fictional, queer religion and mythological space opera, disseminated over 12 years in over 25 countries, titled RELIGIONVIRUS and Niki Sperou’s 20-year reflection on the fusion of contemporary biotechnology and Ancient Greek myth and philosophy, science as ritualistic process, and her production of fleshy forms and chimerical human-plant hybrids. Deviating from the limits of a Judeo-Christian value system, their work extends religious myth-making and speculative futures.
