Factors Affecting PFOA Impact from Landfills: Illustrating a Simplified Assessment Method

Abstract
A simplified procedure is used to examine the various factors controlling the potential impact of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on groundwater quality due to their escape through a composite liner. Transport parameters, including concentrations in leachate and mass of PFOA in the landfill, leakage through the landfill cover and liner system are discussed and the implications explored for PFOA transport through a single and double composite liner comprised of a geomembrane (GMB), a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL), and/or a compacted clay liner (CCL). The use of the simplified assessment method is illustrated and shown to provide an excellent screening tool for assessing the potential impact of a landfill with a composite liner system.
