Abstract
Family groups are among the largest visitor demographics at museums. Insights from the literature of studies conducted in Western contexts, have provided abundant evidence on fostering positive family interactions, but often ignored non-Western cultural nuances which mediate such interaction. From a sociocultural perspective, this instrumental case study helps address this gap by investigating the roles family adults play through unobtrusive observations and interviews with 42 family groups in a Chinese science and technology museum. The research outcomes describe five roles including caregiver, controller, familiar stranger, co-learner, and supporter. This case study reveals the cultural diversity of Chinese family interactions that arguably both help and hinder children’s engagement at museums and may further inform the design of culturally appropriate programs for family visitors with similar backgrounds.
