Aram J. Pothier (1854-1928), premier Franco-Américain à occuper le poste de gouverneur, est un personnage controversé dans sa communauté franco-américaine du Rhode Island. Est-il un Canadien français modèle ou un lâche « assimilateur »? La presse francophone de l’époque est divisée sur ce point. Cet article essaie de mieux comprendre l’identité franco-américaine du futur gouverneur à la lumière de sa correspondance et de ses choix privés. En 1889, commissaire du Rhode Island à l’Exposition universelle de Paris, Pothier écrit vingt lettres à son frère Joseph, qui sont riches d’enseignements du point de vue linguistique et identitaire. La correspondance de Pothier lorsqu’il revient à Paris pour l’Exposition universelle de 1900 n’a pas été conservée, mais c’est à cette occasion qu’il fait la connaissance de sa future épouse, la Française « Françoise de Charmigny ». Cette histoire privée d’Aram Pothier révèle un homme – voire un couple – imbu du rêve américain d’enrichissement personnel et de promotion sociale, mais nullement tenté par l’assimilation. Pothier ne renie jamais l’idéologie de la survivance basée sur la langue, la religion et les traditions françaises. Pourtant, dans sa nouvelle identité à trait d’union, la référence nationale française, symbolisée par son choix d’épouser une Parisienne, remplace en grande partie la référence canadienne. En fin de compte, Aram J. Pothier n’est ni l’homme idéal conçu par les idéologues de la survivance ni un aspirant Yankee. Il réussit à forger sa propre identité franco-américaine en se servant du prestige culturel dont jouit la république soeur aux États-Unis, en alliance avec sa femme française, actrice prête à s’inventer elle aussi un nouveau personnage.
