Autorzy artykułów reprezentują różne ośrodki naukowe, zróżnicowane dziedziny wiedzy, a zagadnienie mniejszości postrzegają z różnych perspektyw. Pragną zabrać głos w imieniu tych wszystkich, którzy z różnych powodów znajdują się na marginesie grup większościowych. Według Alberta Camusa rolą pisarza jest występowanie w obronie wykluczonych, którym odebrano ów oskarżycielski głos. Harold Pinter chce odkrywać „rzeczywistość przez sztukę” dla odbudowania ludzkiej godności. Działania te mają na celu, jak pisała Emma Goldman w swym eseju o wymownym tytule Mniejszości wobec większości, „rozdzielić i rozbić” to, co większościowe, bowiem „zawsze - niezależnie od epoki - mniejszości niosły sztandar wielkiej idei, wysiłku wyzwolenia.
