Abstract
Abstract Traditional medicine and healing (TMH) as practiced by Native Americans was the first health system implemented in the United States and Canada and, as such, the original template for alternative/complementary approaches to health care. The case presented in this chapter touches upon the general principles of the theoretical framework underlying TMH. A basic understanding of the latter will greatly facilitate the approach and management of clinical cases that center around Native American patients, their elders, and their community. The chapter summarizes the key components of an acute bedside intervention as requested by an active and senior member of an American Indian tribal group, who is a tribal elder and palliative care unit patient.
