Cet article examine l’accent placé sur l’illusion dans le Discours sur le bonheur d’Émilie du Châtelet. Il considère, premièrement, sa spécificité en la différenciant de l’erreur et analyse les quatre types d’illusions présentés par la marquise du Châtelet, puis précise comment les illusions se manifestent et le pouvoir que nous avons sur elles. Deuxièmement, il postule que les illusions sont des plus nécessaires pour la félicité, bien que les illusions ne puissent pas nous rendre heureux par elles-mêmes si les autres conditions du bonheur ne sont point remplies. Cette étude aborde, enfin, deux difficultés au sein de l’ouvrage de Mme du Châtelet. Il soutient que l’exercice contradictoire de la raison sur les illusions peut être résolu si la raison inspecte les illusions uniquement lorsque le malheur survient. Il propose également que le concept de l’illusion permet de faire sens de la définition paradoxale du bonheur chez la marquise.
