Vingt-trois ans après les attentats du 11 septembre 2001, l’analyse anthropologique reste cruciale pour appréhender les dynamiques complexes du terrorisme et de la violence. L’anthropologie, en tant que discipline dédiée à l’étude de l’humanité, permet de comprendre que la violence n’est pas un phénomène isolé, mais un outil souvent instrumentalisé pour réguler les sociétés et structurer les rapports de pouvoir. Bien que les évènements du 11 septembre soient fréquemment associés à un extrémisme religieux, il est essentiel de souligner que le terrorisme est un phénomène pluriel, nourri par des facteurs idéologiques, culturels et sociaux variés. Une caractéristique marquante du terrorisme contemporain est la déshumanisation des victimes, souvent réduites à des abstractions telles que « pertes humaines » ou « chiffres de la tragédie ». Parallèlement, les auteurs de ces violences sont parfois représentés comme des « monstres », un mécanisme de déshumanisation réciproque. Ce processus empêche la reconnaissance véritable de la souffrance individuelle, tout en entravant une réflexion plus profonde sur les causes sociales, politiques et économiques de la violence. L’anthropologie offre un éclairage précieux sur ces mécanismes et permet d’ouvrir la voie à une prévention plus efficace des violences futures. La génération interconnectée actuelle, joue un rôle central dans la transformation de ces perceptions, en rejetant ou non les réponses violentes au profit de solutions plus inclusives, solidaires et adaptées aux réalités locales.
