Aux yeux de ses contemporains, Joseph-Charles Taché (1820-1894) était le plus universellement érudit des Canadiens. « M. Taché, notait Henri-Raymond Casgrain, a écrit je ne sais combien de brochures sur je ne sais combien de sujets. » Connu avant tout pour ses recueils de contes et légendes, dont surtout les Trois légendes de mon pays (1861) et Forestiers et voyageurs (1863), l’écrivain originaire de Kamouraska a pratiqué une grande variété de genres littéraires – contes, légendes, poésies, histoires et essais – et abordé presque tous les sujets, de l’Exposition universelle de Paris en 1855 à la « mouche à patate », en passant par l’union des provinces canadiennes, le recensement de la population et le choléra. Or, à ce jour, si la critique a insisté sur la valeur emblématique de Taché comme représentant de la bourgeoisie canadienne-française, si, par ailleurs, des chercheurs ont étudié de manière ponctuelle et isolée certains aspects de son activité, le caractère protéiforme et foisonnant de son œuvre n’a jamais fait l’objet d’un article et encore moins d’une étude d’ensemble. C’est précisément à une telle lacune que le présent ouvrage collectif vise à remédier, en proposant une relecture de l’œuvre de Taché dans une perspective interdisciplinaire et à la lumière de cette donnée essentielle à la compréhension du personnage, à savoir son goût pour la polygraphie. Avec des contributions de Diana Cooper-Richet, Bruce Curtis (traduction de Catherine Broué), Michel Ducharme, Michel Fournier, André Gervais, Julien Goyette, Claude La Charité, Yvan Lamonde, Hélène Marcotte, Dominique Marquis, Jean Morency, Mathieu Noël, Jean-François Rioux, Pierre Rioux, Jean-Claude Simard et Catherine Sutton (traduction de Catherine Broué).
