Abstract
Benzoyl peroxide (BPO)–containing skin products are widely used by consumers to treat acne vulgaris and are considered to be a regulated product by the Food and Drug Administration (Food and Drug Administration, 2010). However, BPO has a stability problem, decomposing into benzene over time in postproduction and under environmental conditions, such as elevated temperatures and UV exposure (Kucera et al, 2024a). The degradation of BPO into benzene is formulation dependent, with certain products having higher levels than others (Kucera et al, 2024b).
