Abstract
Les différentes éditions de ce fameux texte ont en commun d’avoir fait subir un très grand nombre de corrections au manuscrit original (qui est, en vérité, un tapuscrit de 170 feuilles dont une copie est conservée aux archives de l’Université de Montréal). Parmi ces trois cents à quatre cents rectifications, il y a, bien entendu, des coquilles, des fautes de frappe ou des erreurs grammaticales dues à l’inattention de l’auteur. Mais on y recense également quelque deux cents particularités orthographiques qui, à l’analyse, se constituent en un système cohérent d’archaïsation. Elles font partie intégrante du langage de Hémon, avec une signification singulière quant à sa façon de concevoir un roman québécois. De concert avec l’admission des québécismes dans le discours narrateur, elles reflètent une volonté délibérée de sa part de retrouver non seulement un pays, mais aussi une manière d’écrire durant son adolescence. En effet, ces particularités remontent à un état de l’orthographe française du début du xviiie siècle. Cent ans après la disparition accidentelle de l’écrivain, nous livrons ce texte tel qu’il nous l’avait légué. Aucune correction n’a été faite, mais les écarts par rapport à la norme contemporaine, coquilles ou archaïsmes, sont toujours signalés dans les notes en bas de page.
