Abstract
Observations of the redshifted 21-cm signal absorbed and emitted by neutral hydrogen offer one of the most promising methods to study the conditions of the early universe. The birth of the first stars and galaxies during cosmic dawn is imprinted on the globally-averaged signal as an absorption feature, which contains key information about the physics driving their formation. In 2018, the Experiment to Detect the Global EoR Signature (EDGES) collaboration claimed an anomalous detection of the cosmic dawn feature, finding it much deeper and wider than expected, leading to explanations that have variously invoked instrumental effects or the possibility of new physics. The EDGES detection was challenged in 2022 by the Shaped Antenna measurement of the background Radio Spectrum 3 (SARAS-3) team, which rejected the EDGES result with approximately 2σ confidence. The competing results motivates the need for independent teams to apply unique approaches to resolve the tension.
