Abstract
Perseverance is its own reward and necessity is the unmarried mother of invention. — Sergeant Pluck WHAT SORT OF BOOK is Flann O’Brien’s The Third Policeman? An answer may begin with the relationships in the narrative that are basic to aesthetics and existential meaning and with analogies between these relationships. These involve images, human figures, a character and his foretypes, and, most important, the relation between form-or-concept and content-or-substance. Most of us associate form with shape or outline. It has also been synonymous with concept, beginning with the Ideas of Plato and continuing through Aristotle and Aquinas, for whom form is essence or soul and content consists of non-identifying ‘accidents’. In the abstract, concept and substance are distinct, neither requiring the other. An attempt to imagine substance without concept in fictional actuality occurs when O’Brien’s narrator sees ‘things’ falling through a chute in a cabinet in subterranean ‘eternity’: They lacked an essential property of all known objects. I cannot call it shape or configuration … I can only say that these objects, not one of which resembled the other, were of no known dimensions. They were not square or rectangular or circular or simply irregularly shaped nor could it be said that their endless variety was due to dimensional dissimilarities. Simply their appearance, if even that word is not inadmissible, was not understood by the eye and was in any event indescribable.1
