Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease that targets hair follicles and leads to non-scarring hair loss. AA can present at any age, although the level of evidence for data describing pediatric-onset AA is poor and mostly limited to case reports and series. The available data demonstrates a large variation in the average age of presentation in the pediatric population, with reports ranging from 6 to 12 years of age. This review will outline the clinical presentation of AA in the pediatric population and contrast this to adult-onset AA.
