Abstract
William Wordsworth’s “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” has a rich and complex reception history. This article will provide a compendium of examples that map out that history over time and across international borders. Widely referred to as “The Daffodils,” it was originally composed of three stanzas and then published in a four-stanza version in 1815. A staple of the textbook and the classroom, the poem owes its popularity to its bright natural imagery, its musical rhythm, and its themes of renewal and healing. This article provides a wide-ranging history of the poem’s reception, including its influence on other poets, such as Ted Hughes and Gillian Clarke, and its place in postcolonial readings and recuperations by writers such as Lorna Goodison. The poem turns up in surprising places, from souvenir chinaware to the movie The Namesake (based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri) – all examples of the endurance of the daffodil poem and its remarkable literary afterlife.
