Fra midten af senneolitikum og frem til slutningen af ældre bronzealder (ca. 2000–1100 f.Kr.) øges bebyggelsestætheden i Sydjylland, hvilket sker samtidigt med en intensiveringi agerbruget. I tidens huse indes en overlod af agerbrugsrelaterede levn,der imidlertid overskygger indtrykket af husdyrholdet, som optræder langt meresparsomt på bopladserne. Arkæobotaniske analyser har påvist overraskende lighederi indretningen af de sene toskibede og tidlige treskibede langhuse. Dette indbyder tilen nytolkning af den omdiskuterede ændring i arkitekturen, der får sit gennembrudomkring 1500 f.Kr. Indførelsen af den treskibede byggeskik skal ses som et vigtigt ledi monumentaliseringsprocessen, der kulminerer i ældre bronzealder.
