Abstract
US history reveals anti‐immigrant sentiments that grew into English‐only policies and popular beliefs. Rural colonists were generally accepting of diverse immigrant communities, and bilingual programs after the war were relatively common, while expanding immigration in urban locations resulted in crowded classrooms and neighborhoods and increasingly negative views of immigrants. Indigenous children were required to attend boarding schools where governmental English‐only policies were enforced. IQ tests labeled some immigrants as morons, idiots, or imbeciles; many were forbidden entry. Exclusionary laws were passed and English literacy became a requirement. By 1923 English‐only was mandated in 34 states. Bilingual education had a resurgence in the 1960s and research suggests it did not negatively affect English achievement; however, a proposed 2020 Bill to make English the official language suggests English‐only views persist.
