Abstract
Newfoundland English is the umbrella term used for the varieties spoken in the Canadian province Newfoundland and Labrador, with only the island of Newfoundland having been linguistically investigated in any detail. With its long settlement history from the fifteenth century onwards, geographic isolation well into the mid‐twentieth century when coastal villages – outports – received road access, and two distinct subcultures influenced by heritage from South East Ireland and South West England, Newfoundland and its English(es) are still high on the list of “exotic” places and varieties. Most Canadians have never been to Newfoundland, but every Canadian has an opinion on Newfoundlanders and their English. As everywhere, dialect levelling and increasing urbanisation might have lessened the variety's distinctiveness over past decades, but a handful of enregistered features seems sufficient to clearly signal local identity.
