Abstract
As a pidgincreole, Solomon Islands Pijin is used both as the lingua franca for most of the country and as the mother tongue of two generations of urbanites. Over the years, the syntactic and phonological differences between rural and urban registers are increasing, and are accompanied by shifting linguistic ideologies on the part of speakers. This entry will describe the main structural features of Pijin and will identify the main differences between rural and urban registers of the language. Second, focusing on urban Pijin, the entry will show how the urban registers have diversified and are affected by increasing generational and class differences. It will conclude with an analysis of general language shift away from ancestral languages toward Pijin, and with an analysis of the transformation of language repertoires in the country favoring knowledge of Pijin and English.
