Abstract
Initially intended for release in 1958 to commemorate the inauguration of the Federation of the West Indies, The Bright Land premiered in January 1960, two short years before the nation it celebrated was formally dissolved. Delving into the archival record, the chapter explores how the film project holds a mirror to the attempt at federation, reflecting aspirations as well as many of the contradictions and challenges that confronted the political process of the formation of the new nation. The Federation was eager to participate in what was, at the time, the most modern mode of mass communication. However, lacking the resources to make the film and the cooperation of the sole film unit in the region deemed capable of doing so, the Federation commissioned the National Film Board of Canada to implement its vision of a film for the West Indies. The collaboration offers an opportunity to explore, not merely the differences between the objectives of the nation-state in its use of film as a vehicle for nationalism and the creative aspirations and aesthetic values of the filmmakers, but also the tensions within the new nation around the defining of its identity and its very existence.
