Les ergonomes s’appuient depuis les années 1970 sur le modèle de double régulation proposé par Jacques Leplat pour rendre compte des compromis complexes effectués par les opérateurs dans l’activité de travail. Ce texte retrace la genèse et les transformations des représentations de ce modèle pour comprendre ses évolutions, en nous intéressant en particulier à la notion de couplage et en soulignant l’importance des compromis dans les régulations de l’activité. ​La notion de compromis est mobilisée et complétée par la notion d’arbitrage dans l’étude du travail des opérateurs d’une ligne de production automobile qui déploie les principes de la production lean. Cette étude illustre la façon dont les opérateurs gèrent en temps réel les incidents et les variabilités de la production par une réélaboration collective des règles concernant deux dispositifs de la production lean : le système Andon et le marquage au sol.​ Des compromis et arbitrages se révèlent nécessaires pour maintenir la continuité de la production, malgré des objectifs parfois contradictoires. Les arbitrages sont ici considérés comme une forme spécifique des compromis et désignent les situations dans lesquelles le compromis acceptable ne peut pas être trouvé dans la réalisation des buts sans l’intervention d’un tiers, un arbitre. L’intervention tierce, dans notre cas le responsable de l’Unité de Production, autorise et rend légitime la nouvelle règle.
