Abstract
Long-term romantic partners inevitably encounter challenges in their relationships and frequently turn to therapists for assistance. The model of self-expansion may provide direction for therapists aiming to support clients with these concerns. The model posits that personal growth occurs through integrating new aspects into one’s identity. Therapeutic applications of self-expansion within relational counseling are discussed including how self-expansion might evolve with relationship duration affecting factors like commitment, sexual desire, and conflict resolution. Interventions tailored to couples at different relationship stages are discussed. By incorporating self-expansion into practice, therapists can foster deeper understanding, connection, and resilience within relationships, enhancing therapeutic outcomes.
