Abstract
Con la proclamazione della repubblica nel 1889 il Brasile si apre ufficialmente alla modernità, con l’antica capitale coloniale che rompe col suo passato per diventare metropoli moderna. Nel periodo dal 1912 al 1923, Salvador adotta un ambizioso programma di rinnovamento e sviluppo urbano ispirato alla cosiddetta Reforma Urbana di Rio de Janeiro e alla monumentalità espressa dell’architettura eclettica. In questo breve arco di tempo la città subisce notevolissimi cambiamenti, non solo nell’aspetto fisico, ma anche in quello sociale e culturale che ne ridefinisce la stessa identità, assieme al modo di vita degli abitanti. Il fautore e protagonista principale di questo straordinario evento è l’emergente classe borghese: governanti, amministratori, imprenditori e professionisti, che trasformano il paese da preminentemente agrario a urbanizzato, proiettandolo verso la modernità. A Salvador il compito di plasmare materialmente questa trasformazione è assunto prevalentemente da immigranti italiani. In particolare architetti, ingegneri, artisti, capomastri e artigiani edili il cui contributo, per quanto significativo, è poi stato fino a non molto tempo fa dimenticato ed è tuttora, con la scomparsa di molti edifici del periodo, poco documentato.
