Building Capacity from Within—Precarity and Solidarity in Postsecondary Labour Activism

Abstract
This paper draws on the work of Mary Jo Nadeau via her experiences working in postsecondary labour activism at CUPE Local 1281. Through examples from her work, I argue that Nadeau’s political praxis demonstrated how to meaningfully build movements across the differential social locations represented within the diverse makeup of union workers in the Local. Mary Jo Nadeau’s interventions within the structures of political work in the union effected positive structural changes, first by naming intersectional differences as potential barriers to participation, second through fostering discussions in support of effective movement building inclusive of voices largely marginalized by structures, cultures and hierarchies reflecting systemic inequality.
