Syrian Refugee Settlement and Integration in Southwestern Ontario: A Gender Analysis

Abstract
Since November 2015, over 40,000 Syrian refugees have arrived in Canada and are now integrating into Canadian society (Government of Canada, 2017).The refugee settlement and integration process are demanding and stressful, especially for those who are coming from non-English speaking countries to Canada. The experiences of refugee women are especially difficult as they often come as dependent immigrants and face many barriers during settlement. The Syrian refugee families who moved to southwestern Ontario were dispersed into 39 communities. These communities vary in size which includes census metropolitan areas (CMA), census agglomeration areas (CAs) and rural and small towns (RSTs). The profile of Syrian refugees indicates they will face barriers to resettlement and integration in host communities. The goal of my research is to examine the settlement experiences of Syrian refugee families who moved to southwestern Ontario since 2016 by using social relational approach. Their experiences include the challenges that they face and the successes they are achieving during settlement.
