Abstract
Rural communities in India face an array of challenges that are contributing to a crisis in the agricultural sector marked by an alarming rate of farmer suicides. Some authors have noted the significant contribution that well-established rural organizations can make towards empowering communities to address challenges that they face. Therefore, strengthening mechanisms for the development of capacity in community-based organizations (CBOs) in rural India is an important area of study. In a wide variety of contexts, complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory and the notion of learning organizations are increasingly being viewed as sources of valuable insight into organizational capacity building. India has a long and rich history with community engagement and non-governmental organizations. The aim of this study is to gain insight into the relevance and limitations of concepts, tools, and approaches related to CAS theory and learning organizations in the context of CBOs in rural communities in India.
