The effects of crating and road transportation on stress and fear responses of broiler chickens treated with ascorbic acid

Abstract
Heterophil/lymphocyte ratio (HLR) and tonic immobility durations were determined in broiler chickens which were pre-treated for 24 h with either 0 ppm (control) or 1200 ppm L-ascorbic acid in their drinking water. The birds were subsequently left undisturbed in their home cages (CTRL), crated and left stationary for 40 min (CO) or crated and transported for 40 min in an open truck (CT). Irrespective of pre-slaughter treatment, AA-supplemented birds had smaller HLR values (20 h following pre-slaughter treatment) and shorter TI durations. Significant effect of pre-slaughtering process on HLR and TI duration was evident with CT > CO > CTRL. While the number of inductions to induce TI was not affected by water treatment, the CT and CO birds were more susceptible to TI than their CTRL counterparts. Die Tiere wurden drei Behandlungen unterzogen: 1. Haltung in den Aufzuchtkäfigen ohne Handling (CTRL); 2. Verladen mit anschließender Standzeit von 40 Minuten (CO); 3. Verladen und Transport in einem offenen Lastwagen (CT). Die mit Vitamin C behandelten Broiler hatten unabhängig von der Art des Handlings geringere Heterophilen/Lymphozyten-Verhältnisse (20 h nach dem Handling) und zeigten eine kürzere Dauer der tonischen Immobilität. Das Handling der Tiere wirkte sich signifikant auf HLR und TI aus, wobei CT > CO > CTRL. Während die Anzahl der Versuche zum Auslösen der tonischen Immobilität nicht durch die Vitamin C-Applikation beeinflusst wurde, zeigten die Broiler der Behandlungen CT und CO eine deutlichere Ausprägung der tonischen Immobilität als die Tiere der Kontrollgruppe (CTRL).
