Abstract
October 23, 1929 – January 5, 2025 Dick was born October 23, 1929 in Evanston, Illinois, to Grace and Anders Anderson. He attended Beloit College for 3 years, then received a BS from the University of Wisconsin and MS and PhD degrees in fisheries management from the University of Michigan. His major field of studies were zoology and fisheries. He worked on lake surveys in Michigan and, in 1959, was the first college graduate in Michigan to be responsible for a fish hatchery (the Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery). In 1963, Anderson came to Missouri as the first leader of the Missouri Cooperative Fishery Research Unit and was an instructor in fish husbandry, aquatic ecology, and fishery management. For 22 years, he was a valued leader of the unit, where he spread his passion for fishing quality to his graduate students. He conducted research on fish population dynamics in ponds and reservoirs with over 25 graduate students and fishery biologists, particularly those involved in the Central States Small Impoundment Work Group. Many of his students later became leaders in their own right. His keen inquisitive mind led him to challenge and refine older concepts of the structure and dynamics of fish populations. Indices that he developed to describe size structure of fish populations (Proportional Stock Density and Relative Stock Density) and relative condition of individual fish (Wr), were used by fishery biologists throughout the country. These were new approaches that injected “quality” into the outputs of fisheries management. This was right in line with Dick’s mindset that fisheries management should focus not on “maximum sustained yield,” which emphasized numbers of fish harvested or total weight of the harvest, but instead, promoted “optimum sustained yield,” which included quality of the fishing experience. Another innovation of his was to introduce the concept, and use, of slot length limits in order to achieve objectives for density and size structure in populations of Largemouth Bass Micropterus nigricans. This revolutionary concept first took hold in Missouri, then rapidly swept the Midwest, and eventually was applied to several game fish species throughout the USA and Canada. Dick’s pioneering influence on modern-day fishery management cannot be overstated. His groundbreaking ideas led to his recognition as the foremost authority on inland fisheries management in the USA. Between 1977 and 1983, he was invited to at least 21 different states and provinces to present his ideas and conduct workshops. He and his associates published over 40 papers in a variety of journals. Dick was active in the American Fisheries Society and encouraged his students to become members. He was President of the Missouri Chapter from 1966–1967, the North Central Division from 1972–1973, and the Fishery Educators Section from 1979–1980. He was also involved in the Texas Chapter after relocating to San Marcos National Fish Hatchery in Texas. Other organizations he belonged to included the Missouri Academy of Science, Sigma Xi, Midwest Benthological Society, American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, Phi Sigma, the Michigan Association of Conservation Ecologists, Central States Pond Management Work Group, and the Missouri Fish Farmers Association. Awards that Dick received included Best paper award from the North Central Division in 1978, Award of Excellence from the Missouri Chapter in 1983, Gulf Oil Conservation Award in 1984, and a Commendation from the Missouri Chapter in recognition of his many contributions in 1986. He was inducted into the Fish Management Section Hall of Excellence in 1993 and the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in 2011. Many colleagues looked forward to interacting with Dick at meetings and learn of his latest insights and findings. Dick did not have any problem objecting to what a speaker said after or even during a presentation. One student remembered that Dick was always thinking. “I can still picture him smoking his pipe, deep in thought. On the other hand, I can also picture him sitting at the edge of a pond recording data on a scrap of paper or the back of a matchbook cover, because he forgot to bring data sheets.” Another student remembered his tough tests. “In a trophic ecology test, you had to match famous limnologists with their accomplishments. But instead of providing their names, he gave only their initials.” A student in Nebraska had this memory, “I had a connection to Dick during my PhD work on quality panfish populations in Nebraska lakes. I was finding the same patterns in 1,000 acre lakes that Dick had found in Midwest ponds. When I got some graphs of CPUE vs. PSD, I sent them to Dick in Texas. His thoughtful responses were always welcome.” Dick is remembered with fondness by all who knew and loved him. He had an infectious sense of humor, delighted in teasing those he loved, and telling memorable stories. Over the course of his life, he found fulfillment and joy as an Eagle Scout, in his groundbreaking fishery research, fishing with his family and friends, gardening and composting, hunting, golf, playing games on the computer, and watching TV at the side of his wife Joan. He passed on several of these loves to his daughters, along with his love of the outdoors. He is survived by his wife Joan, his daughters Barbara Brandt and Donna Heald, his son-in-law Dennis Heald, his granddaughters Elizabeth (Brandt) Rommel, Katherine (Brandt) Johnson, Angela (Heald) Gaspard, Heather Heald, and 11 great-grandchildren. Let us all remember and support Dick’s favorite saying, “The quality of fishing correlates with the quality of life.” Richard O. (Dick) Anderson died at the age of 95 in Missouri City, Texas, on January 5, 2025.
