Abstract
This paper examines how the period when the Institute of Social Research was affiliated with the University of Columbia in New York marked a critical shift in the Institute’s stance on treating antisemitism as a central issue of modernity. During its exile in New York, spearheaded by Adorno, the Institute articulated a theory of antisemitism that would become pivotal to the Dialectic of Enlightenment and the agenda of Critical Theory. This theory provided a dialectically critical lens through which the Institute analyzed modernity, with antisemitism as its central focus.
