Abstract
Low-loss fluoride glass fibers doped with lanthanide ions have greatly expanded the spectral coverage of fiber lasers, which now extends from visible to mid-infrared wavelengths. The availability of powerful lasers at uncommon wavelengths is enabling the emergence of new applications in many fields, including environmental science, materials processing, medicine and defense. This presentation reviews recent advances in rare-earth-doped fluoride fiber lasers, highlighting their operation from continuous wave to the ultrafast regime and their emission from the visible to mid-infrared spectrum, while demonstrating their transformative potential.
