Abstract
Abstract Sometimes stigmatized in the past as rigid and monolithic, sixteenth-century Petrarchism is now recognized as a vital, diverse, and evolving lyric tradition that adapted to developments such as the rise of print culture, the emergence of women as literary protagonists, and the religious turns of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. This chapter emphasizes Petrarchism’s intersections with other social and cultural practices, and it extends its historical narrative to encompass the neglected decades of the later sixteenth century, which saw a radical expansion of the thematic range of Petrarchist lyric and an accentuation of its role as a vehicle for literary sociability and exchange. Awareness of this late phase of Italian Petrarchism enables a better understanding of the history of Petrarchism outside Italy, including in France, Spain, Britain, the Netherlands, and the Hispanic New World.
