Eupelmidae consists of about 980 valid species classified in 39 genera within three subfamilies, Calosotinae, Eupelminae and Eusandalinae. The family is difficult to define because its diagnostic features are possessed by members of other families and/or are not possessed by all members. Its monophyly is supported neither by morphological nor molecular evidence and the family likely represents a paraphyletic taxon. In particular, male Eupelminae lack the conspicuously modified, apomorphic mesosomal features correlated with enhanced jumping ability that are possessed by all other members of the family, including their conspecific females. Individuals vary in size from less than 1 mm to up to 2 cm in length, excluding ovipositor sheaths, but most species are about 2–3 mm. Members are mostly parasitoids of the immature stages of insects in concealed situations or of eggs, and some are important as biological control agents of agricultural and forestry pests. The chapter provides diagnoses of the family and of its three subfamilies, discusses their morphological diversity, summarizes their known diversity, distribution and host relationships, discusses the history of their classification and phylogenetic relationships, provides a key to the three subfamilies, and newly proposes the common name ‘Bigfoot Wasps’ for the family.
