Abstract
Mymaridae is monophyletic and the sister lineage to all other Chalcidoidea. Totals of 114 valid extant genera, 10 valid subgenera, 11 fossil genera, and about 1530 nominal species have been described, with the greatest diversity in the Australasian and Neotropical regions. All but two species are primary parasitoids in eggs of other insects, but one case of intraspecific hyperparasitism is known. Seven insect orders are reported as hosts, with 40% of the known hosts being Auchenorrhyncha (Hemiptera). Most species are solitary but quite a few are gregarious, with two to (exceptionally) almost 200 adults emerging from a single host egg. Mymaridae have one of the oldest fossil records among Chalcidoidea, with five genera described from the Cretaceous period. The family-group classification is currently unresolved, but at least three subfamilies appear reasonably well-founded based on morphological and molecular evidence.
