Abstract
Endothelial cells are now recognized as dynamic regulators of the vascular system.They exhibit remarkable versatility, exerting anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, and anti-hypertrophic effects that collectively safeguard vascular integrity [1].Cardiovascular disorders cause noticeable alterations in one or more functions of the endothelium referred to as endothelium dysfunction, a consequence of glycocalyx shedding [2,3].The apical surface of endothelial cells is covered by a layer of glycans known as endothelial glycocalyx (eGC) (Fig. 1) [4].The glycocalyx layer has vasculoprotective properties which prevents leukocyte and platelet adhesion, but it also acts as a shear stress mediator to endothelial NO release [1].Cardiovascular risk factors, such hypertension, diabetes, and obesity are directly linked to glycocalyx shedding [5].Understanding the interplay between shear stress and glycocalyx structure is crucial for elucidating the mechanisms underlying endothelial dysfunction.We hypothesize that varying shear stresses will induce structural changes and modulate protein expression within the eGC.
