La présente recherche met l’accent sur l’influence de la pratique de l’orpaillage et de ses activités connexes sur les changements dans la vie sociopolitique des sociétés locales du sud du pays. En effet, depuis la libéralisation du secteur minier opérée par l’État burkinabè dans les années 1990 (Mégret, 2013) et le boum minier qui s’en est suivi, nombreux sont les jeunes qui ont acquis des moyens financiers à la faveur de l’orpaillage qu’ils convertissent en ressources politiques et sociales. L’acquisition de ces ressources a contribué à renforcer non seulement leur pouvoir d’achat, mais également leur pouvoir social et politique. Dotés de ces nouvelles ressources, les jeunes acquièrent plus de visibilité et de possibilités d’action auprès des instances de décision dans leur société. Ils occupent des postes de responsabilité dans les organisations locales de développement, les conseils communaux, etc. Tous ces bouleversements contribuent à favoriser l’émergence de jeunes big men , nouveaux détenteurs de pouvoirs politiques et économiques qui sont en train d’éclipser les anciens détenteurs du pouvoir politique local.
