Abstract
This edited volume is a compilation of papers from two occasions initiated and sponsored by The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized, and Banned Art. The first was a conference held in 2019 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. The second was held in 2022 at Fordham University Law School’s Institute on Religion, Law, and Lawyer’s Work in New York City. Both iterations focused on theological perspectives from the Abrahamic traditions on ‘hospitality to the stranger’ (p. xv) for the purpose of engaging practically with contemporary immigration, particularly with regard to the USA. Another occasion of sorts for this publication was the first term of Donald Trump’s presidency, which nearly a century after the Immigration Act of 1924 similarly tightened strictures on immigration to the USA to an unprecedented degree. ‘At its core, the book contributes to the ongoing dialogue around immigration and displacement, and challenges us to reflect on our attitudes toward newcomers’ by returning to the religious roots of hospitality (p. xiii).
