Cet article est fondé sur l’examen a posteriori d’une recherche interventionnelle et pluridisciplinaire (ECOALES-Uniterres) mêlant sciences sociales et santé publique. Cette recherche conduite entre 2012 et 2015 visait à évaluer les effets de la mise en place d’une action destinée à lier agriculture de proximité et aide alimentaire. Nous examinons ici les enjeux d’une recherche « sur commande » et la place de la participation dans ce dispositif, notamment à travers le mode de gouvernance du projet et son évolution tout au long de la recherche. Ce travail nous mène à observer, dans le sillage de M. Foucault (2004), la trace du néolibéralisme ambiant qui gouverne individus et institutions selon un principe de concurrence (Dardot & Laval, 2009), ce qui tend à façonner la qualité des résultats ainsi que les individus impliqués : chercheurs, commanditaires et/ou financeurs, professionnels, publics ciblés par l’action. Il en résulte une conception de la démocratie envisagée comme une « fabrique du consentement » dans laquelle les décideurs imposent leur vision, utilisant notamment les sciences humaines et sociales pour permettre l’adaptation des masses au modèle de l’individu « entrepreneur de lui‑même ».
