Abstract
Extract COPD is characterised by persistent airflow limitation and breathing difficulties. COPD accounts for 3.2 million deaths annually [1] and affected 10.6% of the global population (480 million cases) in 2020; by 2050, it is projected to affect 600 million people worldwide [2]. This significant burden prompts us to look for an effective treatment for COPD. Identifying the risk factors underlying the heterogeneity of COPD is crucial, with the genome being a key focus for potential biomarkers and drug targets due to its significant role in the disease [3]. In the context of COPD, the genome accounts for 20 to 40% of airflow obstruction [4]. Furthermore, the complex interaction between environmental exposures, such as cigarette smoking and air pollution, and unique features in the DNA drive the development of COPD. Specific genetic mutations, such as alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) [5], further exacerbate the risk of developing COPD.
