Abstract
Cet article traite de la relation entre l’économique et le culturel à travers une analyse du discours pionnier québécois et de sa concrétisation, contestée par les Cris, dans le développement hydroélectrique de la baie James. Il examine comment l’exploitation économique des ressources du territoire par la société industrielle sert à matérialiser un rapport culturel au lieu : en effet, l’expression d’une territorialité québécoise en terre crie (Feyou Istchee) démontre que, même si elle est une « communauté imaginée », la nation québécoise correspond dans son expansion à la diffusion du système capitaliste dans de nouveaux espaces. L’enchâssement de l’économique dans le culturel à la baie James indique la portée historique du capitalisme et son implication dans l’avenir des peuples par le biais du développement économique. Toutefois, la culture se résume-t-elle uniquement à la loi du marché ? L’article se termine par une réflexion élargie sur le potentiel de transformation de la culture en tant que « continuité inconsciente de la société ».
