Abstract
ABSTRACT Drawing inspiration from the postwar classroom experience of Ernest Sirluck, Canada’s first Jewish Miltonist, this article connects military training in Milton’s pedagogy and a Jewish praxis of social justice, or tikkun olam. It examines epistemic images in early modern military books—in particular Jacques de Gheyn’s The Exercise of Arms—as sources of liberatory education and then traces their implications for our understanding of Milton’s martial imagery in The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates. Attending to the reparative and transformative functions of military motions can help to cultivate more inclusive Milton classrooms, which advance the shared commitments of Miltonic and Jewish repair.
