Abstract
ABSTRACT Ernest Sirluck was the first Jewish academic to hold a full-time appointment in English at the University of Toronto: he was one of the moving spirits behind the transformation of that school into a world-class research-intensive university, and he was one of the greatest Milton scholars of his generation. He was typical of the first generation of Jewish emigrants from Eastern Europe, who reinvigorated the intellectual and cultural life of Canada and the United States. But what makes Sirluck’s career so interesting is his talent for the close analysis of the contradictions and contingencies in the quotidian politics that underwrite the production of great literature. This article’s principal aim is to show how that talent was rooted in the precarity of Sirluck’s Jewish upbringing, and how the alertness to the calculus of power it engendered explains his success not only in Milton studies but also in the army and in university administration.
