Abstract
Venäläisen Bubble-kustantamon supersankarisarjakuvasarjan Inok ensimmäisissä kahdessa albumissa päähenkilö seikkailee Venäjän historiallisissa tapahtumissa, joiden pääpaino on menneissä konflikteissa. Artikkelissani tulkitsen Inok-sarjakuvan historiakuvaa sekä sen yhteyttä vallitsevaan venäläiseen narratiiviin lähilukua ja kontekstuaalista tulkintaa käyttäen. Analysoin sarjakuvaa kuvan sekä tekstin sisällön ja muodon kautta. Keskityn myös sarjakuvan kulttuuriseen kontekstiin, erityisesti kulttuurisiin ja historiallisiin mielikuviin sekä viittauksiin, joita se hyödyntää. Tulkintani pohjana käytän erilaisia muistin teorioita sekä aiempaa Venäjän historiapolitiikan, historiankirjoituksen, sarjakuvan ja sotakuvaston tutkimusta. Inok-sarjakuva toisintaa ja vahvistaa venäläistä historiakuvaa kietomalla sarjakuvan tapahtumat kiinteästi osaksi Venäjän virallista historianäkemystä. Tuomalla yliluonnolliset demoniset voimat osaksi historiallisia taisteluita sarjakuva myös toisintaa uskonnollista näkemystä, jossa Venäjä toimii oikeaoppisuuden etuvartiona ja puolustaa maailmaa demonisilta voimilta. In the first two albums of the contemporary Russian superhero comic Inok, published by Bubble, the main character travels through time and visits various historical eras of the Russian past. The main emphasis is on times of conflict. In this article, I analyse the view of history presented in Inok as well as its connections to the prevailing Russian narrative on past conflicts. In my analysis, I utilise close reading and contextual interpretation. Furthermore, I examine the comic through the content and form of its visual and textual elements. I also concentrate on the comic’s cultural context, especially the historical imagery and references employed in it. I base my examination on theories of memory as well as previous research on Russian history politics, history writing, comics, and imagery of war. The comic Inok reproduces and strengthens the official Russian view of history by intertwining its historical events with contemporary political narratives on history. The comic also portrays demonic forces as an integral element of Russia’s historical conflicts. Thus, it reproduces the idea of Russia as an orthodox vanguard that protects the world from the forces of evil.
